Ruined pagoda reveals Ly Dynasty artefacts

Archaeologists have found hundreds of invaluable objects dating back to the eleventh century Ly Dynasty at the site of the ruined Dam Pagoda in the northern province of Bac Ninh after more than a month of research. A stone pillar displaying Ly Dynasty designs The items reveal the grandiose architectural style that was typical of the dynasty. Construction on Dam Pagoda was started in 1086 and completed in 1094. The pagoda site reveals evidence of remains of at least 100 rooms. After nearly 10 centuries, the site contains only stone floors, dragon-carved stone pillars and statues of King Ly Nhan Tong and Queen Mother Y Lan remaining. The excavation at the pagoda was carried out by the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology. Work began on November 4 and was scheduled to finish on November 30 this year. Tran Van Tuy, Party Committee Secretary of Bac Ninh Province, said the excavation would provide the foundation for the province to restore the pagoda. The Ly Dynasty began in 1009 and ended in 1225 after a succession of 11 kings. Hoi An beach ranked among world’s top 50

An Bang Beach in Hoi An has been ranked the world's 43rd best beach by CNNgo.com, a travel publication of CNN. Hoi An Beach Topping the list is Matira Beach in Tahiti in the southern Pacific. "An Bang Beach has long been popular among locals for its gentle waves and soft white sand," CNNgo said. "Recently, it has picked up speed among expat tourists, which explains the Western-managed bars and restaurant along the waterfront. The bars are a great spot to mingle, but if you're in a solitary mood, walk away from the main stretch and you'll feel like you have the place to yourself." The four-kilometre beach is about 3km east of Hoi An. Le Van Giang, head of the Hoi An people's committee, said the city plans to pump more money into tourism projects. Discovering ‘coffin museum’

Po Cung Grotto on Pha Hang Mountain in Thanh Hoa Province is the largest grotto cemetery in Vietnam. The grotto is 10m high, divided into three parts with two doors of 5m high. It is the cemetery for 74 ancient coffins made of tree-trunks. Most of them are quite intact. Anthropologists explained that instead of burying dead people, some ethnic groups put dead people in caves. In Vietnam, this practice was popular during the Dong Son era. Archaeologists discovered coffins dating back to the first century in Thailand caves and coffins from the 5th century BCE to the early 20th century in China's caves. Coffins in the form of dug-out canoes in Po Cung grotto are the first of their kind to be discovered in Vietnam. These coffins are made of tree-trunks and they are placed on wooden brackets. The biggest coffins are 2.8m long, 0.48m wide and the smallest are 1.4m long and 0.28m wide. Many coffins don't have bones inside. Scientists observed that this grotto may be a cemetery of several big families and they still want to know how they brought the coffins into the grotto, which is located high on the mountain. After Po Cung grotto was discovered several years ago in Quan Hoa district, officials have combined with the Institute for Archaeology to research the grotto. The provincial government aims to turn it into a tourist site. Spring Ploughing Festival, a traditional farming practice

Le Tich Dien or Ploughing Ceremonial Festival was a traditional farming practice that has greatly impacted on agricultural production in Vietnam. Agriculture always plays an important role in Vietnam's national economy. All Kings of the past dynasties attached great importance to promoting agricultural production. Le Tich Dien (Ploughing Ceremonial Festival) was held in the capital every spring. The King ploughed a piece of field to pray to Shennong for good weather and a bumper harvest. According to legend, the Ploughing Ceremonial Festival originates from China. Shennong, also called Yan Emperor, was the god who invented farming in the mythology of ancient China. He taught people how to cultivate crops and to establish markets for trading. So they called him Shennong, which means the god of farming. In Vietnam, the first Le Tich Dien was held in 987 AD, during the reign of King Le Dai Hanh in the then capital of Hoa Lu. The king, himself acted as master of the ceremony and went down to the field to plough. After the king ploughed three furrows, all mandarins followed him to the field. Each of them ploughed five, seven or nine furrows depending on their grades. Kings of the following dynasties all maintained this practice and Le Tich Dien became an important ceremonial festival of the royal court. Le Tich Dien was held throughout the Ly, Tran and Le dynasties to promote agricultural production. In 1484, King Le Thanh Tong built a Dan Tien Nong in Hoang Mai village on the outskirts of Thang Long capital. The king went there every spring to pray for Shennong and ploughed the field. Thanks to this agricultural promotion policy, Vietnam's economy in this period developed vigorously and people became more prosperous. The Nguyen dynasty (1802-1945) considered Le Tich Dien one of the three most important ceremonies. King Minh Mang who was known as the King of Farmers held Le Tich Dien in a stately manner. The Tich Dien compound was built within the imperial city of Hue in front of Phu Xuan village's communal house (which now belongs to Tay Loc ward) on an area of about 6 ha. After the Tich Dien ceremony in the imperial city, people from all parts of the country held the Le Xuong Dong or Ploughing the Field ceremony. Le Tich Dien was the most important ceremony of the year during the feudal times. It was also an opportunity for kings, mandarins and lords to undertand the hard work of farmers. Nowaday, the Tich Dien compound in Hue no longer exists. However, many villages in Thua Thien- Hue still hold the ploughing ceremony every year to mark the ancient Tich Dien ceremonial festival. Particularly in 2009 and 2010, with the support from the Government, Tich Dien was held in Doi Son, Duy Tien district, Ha Nam province where the first ceremony was held by King Le Dai Hanh in 987AD. It was attended by State President Nguyen Minh Triet and other officials of ministries and state agencies. Le Tich Dien or Ploughing Ceremonial Festival was a traditional farming practice that has greatly impacted on agricultural production in Vietnam. Vietnam now boasts 15 world heritages

The recent recognition of Vietnam's Ho Dynasty Citadel by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage brought the number of world natural, cultural and documentary heritages possessed by Vietnam to 15. Ha Long Bay Of the three world natural heritages, Ha Long Bay in the northern province of Quang Ninh was honoured as a wonderful masterpiece of nature with 1,969 islands. With an outstanding landscape, the 1,553 sq. km bay was officially placed on the list of the World Natural Heritage by UNESCO in 1994. Six years later, it was recognised as a World Natural Heritage by the organisation for the second time for its geological and geomorphological values. Boasting a unique beauty of limestone mountains, the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park in the central province of Quang Binh was included in the list of World Natural Heritage in 2003 for its geological and geomorphological values. It was also being proposed for inscription into the list for a second time, in terms of biological diversity. Covering an area of 2,350 sq. km, Dong Van Stone Plateau in the northern province of Ha Giang is home to 45 geomorphological heritages, 33 tectonic heritages and numerous fossils in the sedimentary stone strata. The plateau was honoured by UNESCO in 2010. To date Vietnam had ten world cultural heritages, including five tangible cultural ones – the imperial city of Hue, the capital of the Nguyen Dynasty which was recognised in 1993; Hoi An Old Quarters, a busy trading port between the 16 th century and the 19 th century and My Son holy land, the central prayer and worship ceremony place of Cham Pa reigns in the central province of Quang Nam recognised in 1999; Thang Long Royal Citadel, constructed by Vietnam's dynasties which won the recognition in 2010; and the only stone citadel in Vietnam – the Citadel of the Ho Dynasty, which was recognised in 2011. Five world intangible cultural heritages were Hue Royal court music recognised in 2003, the cultural space of gongs in the Central Highlands region in 2005, the Bac Ninh love duet folk music and the ceremonial singing in 2009, and the Giong festival in 2010. Hue Royal court music was often played in royal festivals under the Nguyen Dynasty between the 17th century and the 19th century. The cultural space of gongs in the Central Highlands was a special activity closely tied to community cultural rituals and ceremonies of ethnic groups in Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong and Lam Dong provinces. Meanwhile, with the diversified tunes and singing contents, love duet singing, often performed on the occasion of lunar New Year in villages, reflected the colourful life and outstanding cultural features of Kinh Bac people. The ceremonial singing was an traditional genre of music featuring female vocalists who sang while playing music on bamboo tablets. It was especially popular in the 15th century. The Giong festival was held annually in several parts of northern Vietnam , most typically in the Phu Dong and Soc Temples in Hanoi , to commemorate Saint Giong, one of the immortal quartet in Vietnamese legends. Vietnam also had two UNESCO world documentary heritages, including 82 stone stelae engraved with names of doctorate holders during the Le and Mac dynasties (1442-1779) in the Temple of Literature. The stelae were placed on the lists of the World Documentary Heritage in Asia-Pacific in 2010 and the World Memory in 2011. Another heritage was the wood blocks used for rudimentary printing during the Nguyen dynasty era (1802-1945). Apart from their historical values, the blocks were also artistically and technically precious, since they marked the beginning and development of wood-block carving and printing in Vietnam. They entered the list of the World Memory in 2009. Vietnam's unique horse races

Following an annual tradition, a horse racing festival will take place this summer on June 19 in Bac Ha District, Lao Cai Province. Perhaps, nowhere in the world such a unique, pristine and genuine event such as this is held. An image of last year's horse race. The jockeys are of Dao, Mong and Tay ethnic descents and race without any kind of protection. The only things they are equipped with are a plastic hat in replacement for a helmet and a pair of plastic slippers, not even a saddle is used. The man and his horse will use all their skills and determination to win the race and bring pride to their village. The winner of the 2009 race, jockey Vang Van Thuc (30 years old, of Tay ethnic descent, from Na Hoi Tay Hamlet, Na Hoi Commune) shares, "We don't use a saddle on our horse. We use a rectangular piece of linen that we bind across their back and a rope that we use for their rein. It's impossible for us to whip the horse since we have to use both of our hands to control the horse and keep our balance. As easy as this may sound, it's not easy to do. There is only one spot on the back of the horse that allows us to keep our balance. Our two legs would have to grip tight to the sides of the horse and we have to adjust our body up and down according to the horse's running rhythm. If we accidentally fall, we have to know how to fall to avoid serious injuries." Since the beginning of May, Bac Ha District has been busy preparing for the 2010 Horse Race and it was reported that organisers for this year's event have been selected. The race this year is going to be held on a larger scale. It is estimated that over 150 horses will participate in the march before the race and about 100 will compete in a 1,500 metre race. The horse race is an annual event of Bac Ha District in response to the tourism program of 3 provinces: Lao Cai - Yen Bai - Phu Tho. It has been considered a highlight tourist attraction. According to the district's statistics, the 2009 horse race welcomed 15,000 visitors both domestic and international. An exceptional feature will be a display of a replica of the French warship 'Esperance' that was destroyed on the Nhat Tao River in 1861. The replica will be brought to life with an enactment by a film crew who will relive the glorious exploits of Nguyen Trung Truc as took place during the war. The event is expected to attract more than 800,000 visitors. Nguyen Trung Truc (1839-1868) was the leader of the anti-French colonial uprising in South Vietnam and is remembered for his famous quote, "Only when all the grass in Vietnam has been pulled out then only will there be no Vietnamese person to fight the aggressors." Hanoi sets to expand tourist electric bus fleet

Hanoi's local government has approved a plan to expand the operation of electric powered tourist buses to the city's famous beauty spots. The buses will be allowed to operate in the entire Hoan Kiem District, instead of just the Old Quarter. The new routes will include stops at the Temple of Literature, the citadel, One-pillar Pagoda, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Ba Dinh Square. Other places include Quan Thanh Temple, Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple, Turtoise Tower, Presidential Palace, West Lake, Truc Bach Lake, and Bach Ma Temple. The city earlier granted the Ho Tay One-liability Limited Company the right to import 30 buses for a pilot project around West Lake. In July 2010, Hanoi began operating tours of 40 streets in Hoan Kiem District to serve tourists who want to travel around the Old Quarter. The buses have capacity for eight to 10 people and charge of VND15,000 (USD0.7) a person. Co To offers pristine beach getaway for weary tourists

If you are tired of crowded beaches like Do Son in Hai Phong city or Sam Son in Thanh Hoa province, the beaches of Co To Island may offer you an ideal destination for your holidays. Co To Island Co To, one of the farthest inhabited islands from the mainland, is over 100km from Ha Long city in the northern province of Quang Ninh. Still far off the beaten tourist path, the island retains its natural beauty. A 1.5-hour journey on high-speed boat will bring you there. On the northeast of the island is Hong Van. It's hard to put into words. White sandbanks stretch away to the horizon. Coral reefs are easily to be seen in the limpid water. With an islet nearby blocking winds from the sea, the water is as calm as a clear pond. Tourists visit this expansive beach to swim as well as to see locals catching oysters. Van Chai Beach on the west of the island, appeals' to visitors with rocks of different shapes at either end of the beach. The middle of the beach is flat, the sand clean and smooth, and it offers the best place on the island to watch the sunset. To get another panorama of Co To Island, visitors should go to a lighthouse built in the 19th centur, from which one could see nearby Little Co To and Thanh Lan islands. At the centre of town, standsthe statue of President Ho Chi Minh built in 1968 to commemorate the day he visited the island. This is the only place the late president gave permission to erect a statue of himself while he was alive. A temple was built in 2005 on the occasion of his 115th birthday and to mark the 50th anniversary of his visit, and the site was recognised as a national historical and cultural vestige by the culture ministry. Some tourists visit the site and light incense to the late president when they first set foot on the island. Co To Island is one of the best choices for a getaway from noisy and crowded city life, suited to people looking to enjoy a holiday swimming, taking photographs, walking along the beach, cooking a beach BBQ and singing karaoke with friends. Spending three days on the island, Vu Thu Ha of Hanoi said it was a place worth visiting but the site could be promoted better. "It's a paradise for backpackers but tough for people who want to relax in comfort," she said. "They need to develop infrastructure here such as hotels and entertainment areas. I know that natural beauty is good, but most tourists want hotels with modern conveniences." Island resident Nguyen Khanh Linh said tourism on Co To has developed over the past two years. "Co To received hundreds of visitors over the summer, especially during the busiest times – national holidays and weekends," he said. "In 2010, there were only two guesthouses on the island and most of the tourists had to stay in local people's houses. This year, five new guesthouses have been opened to better meet the demands of tourists."
