A club aimed to preserve Chau van, a Vietnamese traditional folk art, was recently launched in Hanoi. Chau van singing The Research and Preservation of Vietnamese Cultural Beliefs Institution has co-operated with hundreds of artisans in the northern and central regions of Vietnam to found the club. The club includes Chau van singing artisans, researchers and officials in charge from the Government Committee for Religious Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Vietnam National Committee of UNESCO. The club has also attracted the participation of some professional associations, including the Vietnam Folk Literature and Art Association and the National Council for Cultural Heritage. The artisans in the club will open courses to teach Chau van singing in the time to come. The Vietnam Folk Literature and Art Association used the occasion to award five artists with the title Folk Artist. Chau van is a folk art which combines trance singing and dancing, and has been a central feature of Vietnamese cultural practices for centuries.
