While personal development and life skills are a required element of the school curriculum, a lack of teaching materials and facilities for the subject is causing difficulties for teachers. Tran Dai Nghia High School students in a money management class A young teacher at a secondary school in HCM City pioneered the inclusion of life skills education in her specialist teaching subject. However, shortcomings have been revealed in the process of the course being taught, with too much information being compressed into too little time being the main problem. This young teacher also complained about the lack of co-operation from other teachers in her school when knowing that she was trying to include life skills education in her lessons. "We shouldn't experiment on students when we don't know for sure whether it's good for them. I myself wasn't educated in life skills before, so should I use my own experience to educate my students at school?" she said. Headmaster of Co Loa Primary School in Phu Nhuan District, Nguyen Thi Lan Huong said, "This policy may be alright in theory, but in fact, there are no standard documents, curriculum, or textbooks for this subject so our teachers are struggling". Headmaster of Le Dinh Chinh Primary School Le thi Hanh Dung shared the same concerns, "When teachers have to study and research teaching methods themselves, they will hesitate about teaching the subject". Academic publishing houses will take advantage of this chance to publish curriculum and text books on life skills education which will challenge censors and confuse teachers and students due to the numerous views on the subject. Pro. Doc. Thai Duy Tuyen admitted that there were many shortcoming in teaching life skills at schools, but the most urgent requirement now was to create a standard curriculum for teachers. "If teachers don't have curriculum, then no matter how smart they are, or how persuasively they can speak, it's not education. That's sharing experiences". In order to cram in the necessary information without overloading their pupils, teachers need to change their teaching methods. However, teachers are taking over quite a lot of tasks, including teaching and carrying out administrative tasks, and this new requirement will put more pressure on them. Bui Ngoc Cam Tu, a teacher at Chau Van Liem Secondary school, shared, "Educating students about healthy lifestyle, morality, order and discipline is always one of our top priorities. However, due to so much pressure put on us, such as preparing lesson plans, managing class attendance, and competition between teachers and classes, we don't have much time left to study this new subject's teaching methods". In response many teachers have only included some knowledge of life skills education in their lessons when their classes are attended by the school managing board. Opinions collected from many teachers show that when they have not been provided with the necessary teaching skills, and they will only carry out the classes for the sake of appearances, giving little attention to the quality of the teaching. A survey carried out by the Institute of Educational Managers HCM City revealed that teachers want knowledge and skills to educate life skills for their students. However, training courses have failed to meet their expectations.To make teachers confident in educating life skills, they also need to improve their own life experiences. Training courses by themselves aren't an effective solution. Some schools had to invite specialised lecturers and private organisations to take on the task of teaching students.
