Hue lecturers dismissed for gross fraud

Phu Xuan University's managing board removed Head of the Department of Physical Education – National Security and dismissed a lecturer in same department due to financial misconduct on April 4. Phu Xuan University Students had sent letters to the university's governing board and the media to denounce Head of the Department of Physical Education – National Security Le Phung and lecturer Nguyen Van Nam. Following the accusations the university immediately conducted an investigation which reported on March 9. Nguyen Hong Son who was in charge of the investigation revealed there had been 15 misdemeanours divided into four main groups, including disregard for their management task and deviation from their assigned curriculums, extortion from students, false financial reporting, and breaches of professional ethics. The two men were said to have departed from official course material, which would have required the permission of the Ministry of Education and Training. The effect of this was to force students to continue studying in order to force them to pay bribes for higher grades. The men also extorted alleged tuition fees at three times the normal rate, destroyed receipts, failed to account for tuition fees and forged signatures. Le Phung and Nguyen Van Nam set up fake teaching schedules to deceive the university management board, garnered support among other lecturers and students to hide their actions, and showed no remorse for their actions. The inspectors called for Phung and Nam to be sacked. Phu Xuan University's management board approved the proposed disciplinary procedures.
